STANDARD PAINTING VS PREFINISHING
PAINTING PVC TRIM & MOULDINGS
“STANDARD” PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS – PVC Manufacturers Recommendations
• Clean surface before applying paint by wiping down with mild detergent (Spic ‘n Span) or denatured alcohol as surface must be free of dirt, oil and any other surface contaminates prior to painting.
• Although not required, Scuff Sanding will optimize paint adhesion and is recommended. Sand the boards with a 220 grit sandpaper to prepare surface for primer and paint. Immediately after scuff sanding, clean surface by wiping down with detergent or denatured alcohol as noted above, or wipe down with a tack cloth in order to get rid of particles created from sanding.
• Follow paint manufacturer’s guide for proper surface preparation and application recommendations indicative of their respective paints.
• Apply a thin coat of primer/sealer made for PVC & Plastics to the surface using a high quality bristle brush. Let dry about two hours and apply a second thin coat of primer/sealer. Most paint manufacturers’ will require a primer coat in order to warranty the paint.
• Apply top coat of 100% acrylic latex paint with colors having a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 55 or higher. For darker colors (54 or lower) use a heat reflective paint such as Sherwin-Williams with VinylSafe Technology. A top quality brush as recommended by manufacturer, a foam brush, or a spray applicator may be used for application.
